The rapidly growing company, which offers safety training programs and equipment, is eyeing additional acquisitions as a strategy for continued growth.

OWINGS MILLS, MD – April 4, 2022 – Heart To Beat LLC, a rapidly growing company that offers comprehensive safety training programs and equipment to protect employees from workplace emergencies, announced today that it has acquired Bay Area CPR.

The deal will give Heart To Beat as many as 70 new commercial clients while continuing to expand its presence in the Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia markets.

“Heart To Beat is in growth mode,” Scott Kuhlman, Founder and CEO of the company. “Our acquisition of Bay Area CPR is an opportunity to continue expanding in the D.C. metro area. It is the next logical step, which will be followed by our hiring more instructors in that market”

Gene Parker, Partner at Heart To Beat, added, “We’re committed to significant growth while maintaining high standards and quality. This growth will come in large part from acquiring other businesses. We’re targeting exponential growth rather than incremental growth, which is also beneficial for our clients.”

Terms of the transaction were not announced.

Bay Area CPR is based in Pasadena, Md., and was founded by Joyce Heid. The company specializes in personalized CPR training, first aid and automated external defibrillator (AED) training. Heart To Beat has nearly 20 employees, and clients that include Under Armour, Amtrak, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Penn National Golf Club & Inn.

Founded by Kuhlman in 2016, Heart To Beat last year expanded from six to 17 states and saw revenue grow nearly 400 percent. It offers CPR/AED, first aid, stop the bleed, lifeguarding and active shooter training. The company’s consulting services focus on safety equipment audits and security and threat assessments. It also provides safety equipment such as AEDs, first aid cabinets, bleeding control cabinets and personal protective equipment, as well as AED management. Recently, it developed a cloud-based portal that allows it to remotely manage client defibrillators and first aid kits across the country.

Prior to forming Heart To Beat, Kuhlman served in a Baltimore metro fire department responding to critically ill and injured people. He rose to the rank of EMS Captain, overseeing nearly 55 EMS personnel.

“I was volunteering in the fire department and saw a gap between the emergency occurring and help arriving,” said Kuhlman who is a practicing first responder. “Nine, 10, 11 minutes seemed endless to the person who was waiting. My goal was to change how they responded to emergencies in the future.”

Kuhlman brought in Parker in 2021, an active volunteer firefighter and nationally registered EMT at the Lutherville VFC. Prior to joining Heart To Beat, Parker spent 26 years with Continental Realty Corporation, a $2 billion commercial real estate company, where he served in numerous leadership roles including President.

Heart To Beat has been able to grow rapidly in the emergency services industry because it offers an array of services under one roof and hires experts to work with clients. They include paramedics, EMTs, firefighters, nurses, an emergency room physician, and veteran law enforcement professionals who are experts in active shooter training.

“Everything we talk about when you stop breathing, when you lose a pulse, and when bullets fly, we have a very thorough and professional approach,” Kuhlman said.

Heart To Beat will continue to look for acquisitions, the executive said, and will also explore franchising and licensing the model they have built.

“We are building our company so we have all of the resources that you would need to grow,” Kuhlman said. “We always make long-term decisions which will support our growth over time.”
